Japan needs to navigate a pathway between the United States and China

Japan and its companies are increasingly finding themselves in the middle of US-China tensions. The CEO of a leading international Japanese firm, Uniqlo, has stated that he wants his business and japan to be neutral between the US and China. This position was reified when Uniqulo refused to comment whether it uses Xinjiang cotton in its production process, ruling itself out of the US-led Xinjiang cotton boycott. Whilst China is Japan’s largest trading partner, Prime Minister Kishida looks to continue his LDP predecessors foreign and security policy prioritising the US and Quad alliances.
