In this opinion article on the Wall Street Journal, Walter Russell Mead states that “as with Japan in the 1930’s, China is merely a country tempted to exploit a temporary window of opportunity to transform the region in a way it hopes could guarantee its primacy for the long term”. According to Mead, China is not the pre-destined superpower of Asia, contrary to the popular narrative, and the discussion around the U.S.-China rift is too simplistic.
