Edinburgh Diwali Festival 2016
For many years Edinburgh has been known as the ‘city of festivals’ and has been very successful in attracting and mounting programmes of the highest quality from around the world. Edinburgh has taken the initiative to promote festivals that could cater for the specific needs of ethnic communities settled in Scotland in general and Edinburgh in particular. To achieve this objective, it has attempted to bring in popular festivals from their countries of origin so that the mainstream community can share, participate in, and enjoy these festivals. Last year Edinburgh organised the first highly successful Diwali – the most famous Festival of Lights widely supported by over 5OOO people with their families. This is one of most ancient festivals in the world celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists. It signifies the Victory of Good over Evil, Light over Darkness, Knowledge over Ignorance, and Hope over Despair.
Diwali will be celebrated this year on Saturday 12 November 2O16 at the Ross Band Stand in Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh. Uniquely the ceremony will also mark the start of a very significant year, the 7Oth Anniversary of Indian Independence.
