Appointment of Institute Director

EDINBURGH 24th JUNE 2016

Roddy Gow OBE, Chairman, and the Board of the Asia Scotland Institute are delighted to announce the appointment of the Institute’s new Director, David Birrell. He joins from the Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce after a highly successful career spanning over twenty years with Unilever. He brings his experience of international business, including Asia, and his five years with the Chamber in Edinburgh to bear on the future growth of the Institute.
Roddy Gow said “We are very pleased to have been able to attract someone of David’s calibre to carry our activities forward as we enter our fifth year. I have no doubt that he will build on our success to date and help energise our activities in the fields of education and the development of international business skills in the Scottish community. This is a critical time for Scotland which accentuates our role in providing a gateway to expert knowledge and insight on Asia. David will clearly help build our momentum in the years ahead”.
David Birrell commented “I am delighted to join the Institute at a very exciting time, building on the achievements in providing access to the highest calibre of knowledge and insight on Asia. I look forward to working together with our partners and members in attracting even stronger support in Scotland and extending our reach across the globe”.

With David Birrell’s arrival, Callam Fletcher, previously Chief Executive, assumes the role of Senior Adviser Europe on moving to Zurich. He will retain his links with the Asia Scotland Institute and help in building a network of like-minded institutions in Switzerland and elsewhere. Roddy Gow commented “Callam has performed a great job in repositioning the Institute during his time with us and generated a number of important initiatives to carry us forward. We are very grateful for all that he has done”.
Callam Fletcher commented “I am extremely proud of what the Asia Scotland Institute has achieved. With new support from a series of corporate partners, and at a time of great momentum, I am delighted to hand over responsibility and look forward to supporting the Institute in Europe”.

All good wishes to David Birrell. The Asia Scotland Institute is doing a first class job in educating Scots about how others think and act all over the globe but most particularly in Asia. This is essential for us all as we had for too long neglected our Commonwealth Cousins and Colleagues and India and others will be happy to enter into business with us. Naturally there is China too, but I like to stress Commonwealth connections. However, I attended and hugely enjoyed the talk this morning by the Premier of Nova Scotia…ie in the western direction. A very good meeting….bravo.
