Japan, Scotland’s Gateway to Pacific Trade

Title Slide Japan SCOTLANDS GATEWAY TO PACIFIC TRADE

Event Description

The recent Economic Partnership Agreement between the UK and Japan has opened up areas for enhanced trade and collaboration, this is especially true for Japan and Scotland’s relationship; particularly in its internet and technology services, financial services, environmental protection, pharmaceuticals, agriculture/food and drink industries.

This agreement has gained increased interest due to the UK’s application to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), of which Japan is already a member. The CPTPP is an extensive network of bilateral and regional trade agreements among member economies, but it breaks new ground, especially in freeing cross-border data flows and trade in digital goods, banning server localization, promoting consumer data privacy, and liberalizing trade in services. The CPTPP is of great interest to the UK and provides the opportunity for Japan to enhance ties with Scotland in what is already a relationship steeped in history.

Topics Covered

  • The UK’s opportunity to collaborate with the CPTPP
  • How co-operation between Japan and Scotland can develop
  • The opportunities for Japan after the signing of the Economic Partnership Agreement
