Clear Thinking and Sound Judgement on China
About the Event
The Hon Tony Abbott AC will discuss how China is seen from Australia in relation to economic, political and values issues.
When Tony Abbott was prime minister, Australia managed to obtain the first free trade deal between China and a G20 country. Yet he has also been one of the first leaders to call out China for its crushing of Hong Kong and belligerence towards Taiwan. He says that we’re in a cold peace rather than a cold war and that the challenge is making sure the peace holds.
Tony Abbott served as Prime Minister of Australia from 2013 to 2015 and leader of the Liberal Party from 2009 to 2015. He was a front bencher throughout the Howard government and leader of the House of Representatives from 2001 to 2007. Tony studied economics and law at the University of Sydney, and then attended The Queen’s College, Oxford, as a Rhodes Scholar, studying Philosophy, Politics and Economics. After graduating from Oxford, Abbott briefly trained as a Roman Catholic seminarian, and later worked as a journalist, manager, and political adviser. In 1992, he was appointed director of Australians for Constitutional Monarchy, a position he held until his election to parliament at the 1994 Warringah by-election. He is a patron of numerous charities including Soldier On and Worldwide Support for Development.
