The Asia Scotland Institute is delighted to announce that it will conduct a webinar with a panel made up of Sir Malcolm Rifkind KCMG QC, the Honourable Alvin Yeung and the Honourable Dennis Kwok. Sir Malcolm Rifkind was a British politician who served in various roles as a Cabinet minister under Prime Ministers Margaret Thatcher and John Major, including Secretary of State for Scotland, Defence Secretary, and Foreign Secretary. Alvin Yeung is Leader of the Civic Party & Legislative Council Member in Hong Kong. Dennis Kwok is also a Legislative Council Member.
Sir Malcolm Rifkind was Foreign Secretary during the handover of Hong Kong. The two law makers have described Hong Kong’s future as a competition between two competing systems of government: mainland China’s authoritarianism and Western liberal democracy, which Dennis Kwok defined as including the rule of law, an independent judiciary, basic freedoms, and due process, he added “These two values are in conflict, …Hong Kong is a good reflection of what we see globally”.
